SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
29TH JULY – 2ND AUGUST 2007

AT THE SCOTTISH EXHIBITION CONFERENCE CENTRE. GLASGOW

Soroptimist International was pleased to announce the holding its XV111 Convention in the City of Culture. Glasgow.

HRH The Princess Royal honoured the organisation by joining us during Convention and we shared our project work examples and ideas with her. This was a great privilege for the 1,500 worldwide delegates of Soroptimist International attending this Convention.

Soroptimist International has hundreds of projects in local, national and international areas of need; all work towards developing the quality of life for women and children through Education, Human Rights & the Status of Women, Health, Economic & Social Development, Environment all through International Understanding and Goodwill. There has never been a time when all these categories have been more needed: the world needs a Global Voice for Women and Soroptimists aim to be that voice especially for those who do not have the opportunity to raise their issues themselves. Through lobbying governments, giving practical help and financing projects across boundaries we work through a Global Vision to achieve their needs.

The Convention had many leading speakers: Professor Cox, an expert on Global Warming issues, a subject Soroptimists are very involved in: Professor Mary Renfrew, works in the field of Mother and Infant Health Research: Dr Rawwide Baksh of Ottawa’s Research Centre, spoke on Women’s Rights and Citizenship: Eve Richings, the award winning television presenter, and the inspirational Satish Kumar, the peace campaigner and educationalist.

All these speakers reflected the work our Organisation is involved in and gave us ideas, information and motivation to continue and widen that work.

Soroptimists have fun whilst working. We were invited to a Civic reception in The Science Museum; warm and friendly Scottish hospitality around Southern Scotland: a banquet to celebrate our achievements and our delegates had time for shopping, visiting the wonderful galleries and museums around the City

Our International President, Lynn Dunning comes from South Lancashire, is the head of a large comprehensive school giving her many professional challenges but she is totalling committed to our organisation and its project work, visiting many throughout her term of office and being a role model for all women to achieve, stimulating others to do so through their membership and the various opportunities that offers in so many varied fields.

Soroptimists returned home from their Convention both stimulated and excited and with happy memories of the sights and sounds of the City of Glasgow.
